Thoughtful design and collaboration across disciplines have earned the Ochiltree Block Infill Project a 2025 Remix Award from Historic Denver. This award recognizes the project’s creative integration of historic preservation coupled with modern development.
Located at 2935 Zuni Street in Denver, the project brings new life to a historic landmark while introducing contemporary residential and retail space that complements the surrounding neighborhood.
Selected from 20 entries, the project highlights the power of context-sensitive design and the importance of preserving architectural heritage while meeting the needs of a growing city.
Blending Historic Character with Modern Living
Originally constructed in 1892 for commercial use, the Ochiltree Block is a recognized Denver landmark. The revitalization effort included two key components: the renovation of the historic structure and the addition of a new residential building designed to respect its historic context.
Architecture firm Bryant Flink Architecture + Design led the design of The Griffin, a new 32-unit residential building with ground-floor retail, thoughtfully positioned adjacent to the north, alongside the historic Ochiltree Block. The design accentuates and complements the historic structure, highlighting its late-19th-century detailing while introducing a more modern architectural layer.
In addition to the new construction, 12 residential units within the historic Ochiltree Block were updated, ensuring the building continues to serve the community while preserving its historic identity.
